"Whistle
Wing VI" a 1972 Trumpy
One
of the great builders of premier yachts in
the United States, John Trumpy & Sons, designed
and built yachts that earned an international
reputation for excellence. From the founding
of Mathis Yacht Building Company in 1910, through
the closing of John Trumpy & Sons in 1973,
he and his family continued to evolve and improve
on the building of first class yachts. They
were renowned for fine motoryachts, classic
houseboats, US Government war craft and several
fine sailing vessels ... among them this example
of Trumpy's craftsmanship, the motoryacht "Whistle
Wing VI."
Originally
designed and built as "Egret" for
Mr. C. Porter Schutt in 1972, at the Trumpy
boat yard in Annapolis, MD, she was acquired
by Mr. Hastings Harcourt, the well known
sail racing publisher of Harcourt, Brace,
Jovanovitch. Mr. Harcourt owned many Whistle
Wings that were widely raced on San Francisco
Bay and the Atlantic Coast.
In
1981, Mr. Harcourt brought "Whistle Wing VI"
around from New York to Santa Barbara on her
own bottom after a year in the Caribbean where
she remained until 1994 when she was acquired
by her
present owners, Fred Gledhill and Beverly Priest.
A full and complete restoration took about 3
years to bring this beautiful motor sailor to
her original fantastic condition. The layout
and revisions to the original design of both
interior and exterior speak well of the ability
of natural woods to create an ambiance not available
in other materials.
